I recently acquired a beautiful imported vintage genuine leather jacket at the Church Street market off Cape Town’s famous Long Street, and it made me realize that our city is burgeoning with cute, inconspicuous little magical markets with beautiful , cost-effective , rare bargain trinkets and treasures, which are known to only a select few.

The market place is a great asset to any city offering a diverse range of products and a bustling atmosphere. You’ll often meet charismatic traders who are expert in what they sell and budding entrepreneurs who are keen to share their ideas. The markets in Cape Town and surrounds are no exception bursting with artisan food, arts and crafts, antiques, vintage clothing and electrical goods. We’ve been getting quite a taste for market shopping to bring you a selection of the best markets in Cape Town and surrounds.

Neighbourgoods Market (personal fave #2 mj)

Visit this original gourmet market between 09:00 and 14:00 every Saturday for fresh vegetables, seafood, gourmet goodies, artisan breads, organic ciders and the best coffee in town. Arrive early to avoid the rush at this popular festive market.

Greenmarket Square

You’ll find arts and crafts, hand painted fabrics, wood carvings, glassware, clothing, curios and much more at one of Cape Town’s oldest markets. Visit between 09:00 and 16:00 from Monday to Friday and between 09:00 and 15:00 every Saturday to meet vibrant market sellers.

Victoria and Alfred Markets

Situated in Victoria Wharf Shopping Centre you’ll find South Africa’s largest indoor craft market The Red Shed, packed with handmade merchandise. You’ll also find The Barrow Court which showcases colourful and novel wares from a handful of entrepreneurs with bright ideas. Both markets are open between 09:00 and 21:00 from Monday to Sunday. Head further down East Pier Road and you’ll come across the Waterfront Craft Market, opposite the Two Oceans Aquarium. Visit daily between 09:30 and 18:00 for design, handicrafts, antiquities and holistic lifestyle accessories.

Milnerton Flea Market

Not sure what you’re after? Visit the second-hand flea market with everything between 07:00 and 16:00 every Saturday and Sunday for irons to biltong. Expect t-shirts, car parts, computers, Tupperware, telephones, exercise machines and much more.

Millstone Eco-friendly Farm Stall & Cafe

For a market with a homely feel, head to one of Cape Town’s best kept secrets between 09:00 and 17:00 from Tuesday to Sunday. Enjoy lazy breakfasts or lunches, vegetables from a horse and cart or stock up on homemade preserves and jams.

Khayelitsha Craft Market

Visit between 09:00 and 14:00 from Monday to Friday and between 09:00 and 13:00 to meet the locals, buy crafts and souvenirs, enjoy refreshments and traditional African meals. The craft market aims to alleviate local poverty and goods are made by members of the local community.

The Woodmill Market

The Woodmill Market takes place in the heart of Stellenbosch and is open every Friday evening from 5:30pm to 10pm. Entry is free and the live music and an eclectic mix of products and produce makes for an enjoyable and unique outing with friends and family. Expect to see artisans selling top-end products; food stalls and boutique wineries. There is also a designated kiddies area and ample parking available.

Church Street Antiques Market (personal fave #1, mj)

Visit Church Street’s charming and cheerful market between 09:00 and 16:00 from Monday to Saturday for vintage clothes, antique costume jewellery, accessories, handmade curios and tarot card readers. Arrive early on a Saturday as they pack up early and check out the indoor version on rainy days. The lovely ladies are always willing to negotiate the best price for their treasures.

Green Point Flea Market

Over 400 stalls sell clothing, electrical goods, antiques, bric-a-brac, books, magazines, hardware and kitchen goods. Visit between 08:30 and 17:00 every Sunday and you’ll also encounter a food emporium offering tasty morsels including fish and chips, boerewors rolls and Cape Malay delicacies.

The Sunday Island Market

Visit Cape Town’s first dedicated indoor home and lifestyle market between 10:00 and 15:00 every Sunday for a host of shopping and lifestyle booths, a range of delectable food, children’s activities, wine tastings and home and decor products. There’s something for everyone, plus free entry and parking.

Hout Bay Craft Market

A popular attraction at Hout Bay’s village green, the craft market is set in idyllic mountain ranges. Visit between 10:00 and 16:00 every Sunday for clothing, leather work, iron and steel work, South African curios, wire work, basket work, handmade toiletries, pottery and ceramics, textiles, paintings, puppets, children’s toys and much more.

Earth Fair Food Market (personal fave #3 mj)

Situated in Tokai and St.George’s mall, this gem of a farmer’s market includes fresh organic fruit , seeds and vegetables, authentic Spanish paella, sushi and spring rolls made on site, home made quiche and lemon juice (the vendor assures me the recipe is a family secret from Cyprus!), exotic flavoured fudge, gorgeous cupcakes, a variety of locally produced cheeses and much more to appeal to the taste of even the most fussy foodie.
